Hyderabad: A man from the city was cheated of Rs.17.8 lakh by fraudsters on a popular matrimony site. The victim, a resident of New Bowenpally, had uploaded his profile on the site seeking a suitable alliance and was contacted by an unidentified woman who claimed to be a doctor and settled in the United Kingdom.
“Through phone calls and messages, she gained his confidence through fake stories about herself and told him she would marry him once she returns to India,” police said, adding that recently, she informed the victim that she was coming to India and was bringing some costly gifts and valuables. He later got calls from persons claiming to be airport authorities and Customs officials from the Delhi Airport, saying they had detained the woman who was in illegal possession of foreign currency worth over Rs.1 crore. They asked him to transfer Rs.17.9 lakh towards income tax and other fee. He transferred the money but later grew suspicious when there was no response from her to his calls.
He approached the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police, who have booked a case and are investigating.
