Hyderabad: It is a scenario where a person who tested positive for Covid-19 can’t step out of their homes to purchase medicines, groceries and other necessities. Moreover, with the increasing number of cases, there’s also an increase in the necessity for people who can bring Covid patients the required items.

Several youngsters across the city have risen up to the occasion and one such person is Rohith Vakrala, from the NGO Council for Transforming India.

Having started off by delivering in various localities in Alwal, Kompally, Suchitra and Bolarum to various people who tested positive, especially the elderly ones, Rohith and their friends Sriharshitha, Vinay, Vivek and Amruth together formed The Hyderabad Essentials Delivery Collective (THEDC), and extended their services across the city.

“When we receive a request either on our phone or on social media, our network of volunteers get into action and buy the necessary medicines, groceries and deliver it to the ones in need. We only take the cost price of whatever they want and the delivery is done free of cost,” says Rohith.

The team of 75 volunteers across the city deliver essentials in a contactless manner and they pay for the fuel charges in addition to donating their time for the cause.

“In the last few days, we have received many calls, specifically from NRIs, whose elderly patients are in home-isolation after testing positive and we also deliver food from restaurants or other places, to ensure they don’t have to cook,” adds Rohith, saying, “We are receiving almost a hundred requests a day”

Apart from delivering necessities, their group is also handling other COVID related requirements like organising beds in hospitals, connecting doctors, etc.
