Hyderabad: While most dentists are busy mending their patients’ teeth, this orthodontist from Hyderabad has also gained thousands of followers on Instagram by reviewing the city’s restaurants – not in Hindi or English – but proper Hyderabadi.
Dr Ahmed Ashfaq, whose Instagram handle @dr.foodiehyd has over 25K followers, shares that not just people from the city but across the country like his content.

“I am a foodie – I think all Hyderabadis are. I love to explore new food outlets. I started with posting pictures and putting the reviews in the caption on Instagram. Slowly I started making the videos. One day the app that I used to add music wasn’t working and as I had to upload the video, I just added a voice over in which I reviewed the food in Hyderabadi. Many people liked it and I started uploading regular reels with my voice over. Initially only people from the city watched my content. However, since reels have way more visibility than photos on Instagram, many people from other States have also been watching and liking my content,” says Ahmed, who is also a practising orthodontist.
Ask the dentist why he chose to do the voice overs in Hyderabadi, and he quips, “Most content on social networking apps is either in Hindi and English, I wanted to do something different. For most Hyderabadis, ‘Dakkhani’ is the language that they have grown up speaking, and thus they connect to it. I wanted to explore doing something in that. Although several people told me it might not work, I still wanted to give it a try.”
Check a sample of his Hyderabadi style presentation. In one of his reviews of a hotel on Instagram, Dr Ahmed Ashfaq, says, “mirchi ka salan chotey lotey mein diyayin” and searching for a piece of mutton in the dish, adds, “ghost kidhar hai bhai..dikhra hi nahi”. Locating a piece, he says, “ooo..ek boti mili.”
With Butter Chicken Bao, Dr Ashfaq explains in his inimitable Hyderabadi style, “bunon ke beech mein khupas ke diye..sideon se tapakra dekho.” The best is reserved for Roganjosh as he says, “Rogan bolke bachey ko Josh aya dish banana bolke.”
His reels have become so popular that several restaurants have started calling him to review their food too. “After watching my content, several food outlets have been approaching me to review their food too,” he says.
There are several amazing foot outlets in the city, he points out and adds that he had reviewed many of them including Shaadab, Marriott, Park Hyatt and Dine Hill Restaurant.
But Ahmed is not just a doctor and food reviewer. He is also a baker, and along with his sibling and mother is running a bakery, Le Tesoro, at Banjara Hills. “As a family, we love to bake. When the lockdown was first announced in 2020, we got a lot of time to experiment with the tried and tested recipes. That’s when we came up with the idea of a bakery, and we started it as a pre-order only basis. Our customers recommended us to others and right now we have loads of orders. We are working on expanding our wings now and getting a proper outlet of the bakery,” concludes Ahmed.
