Dubai: There is no food quite like Hyderabadi food. From the curries and spices to the unique and complex flavour pairings, Deccani dishes always stand out. Some dishes are known for their aroma, while others for being spicy.

Haleem, a stew of mutton, lentils and wheat, has been the most sought after dish during the fasting month of Ramzan in the Gulf too. Like the rest of the world, the Hyderabadi community in Dubai prefers to have Haleem during the Iftar.

According to Hyderabadi cuisine hoteliers in Dubai, Haleem is the dish that is sold mostly during Ramzan. Haleem is a source for community bonding among Hyderabadis abroad, besides reflection of rich heritage, with no family or community gathering being complete without Haleem during Ramzan.

Moreover, it’s not confined only to the Hyderabadi community as it is loved by people from other States and countries, even Arabs too. Haleem is the only Hyderabadi dish that doesn’t have any “Mirchi and Ghatta” (chilly and tamarind), a distinct Hyderabad mark on its cuisine. This makes it loved by all.

“Every year, there is above 30 per cent increase in Haleem sales where a significant number of customers are from other States and countries,” revealed Shahran bin Ahmed, owner of Shahran Restaurant, a popular Hyderabadi cuisine restaurant in Dubai.

All branches of Shahran Restaurants in Dubai and Sharjah are struggling to cope with the increased demand for Haleem during the month of Ramzan, he said.

“Haleem is being served in most of Majlis gatherings of Arabs at our restaurant,” Shahran added.

Other Hyderabadi restaurants are also on the same page when it comes to Haleem sale. Due to fasting, most people were exhausted, yet they drive into the bustling Al Nahda neighborhoud in the city to buy Haleem in Hyderabadi restaurants in the area.

In Saudi Arabia, an average of 20 quintals of Haleem is being sold per day according to restaurant sources. Oman, Qatar and Kuwait also witnessed a significant surge in Haleem sales.
