Hyderabad: It is a bakery that had a humble beginning in the late 70’s and since then, the owners, catered to scores of Hyderabadis. The iconic Universal Bakery in the busy Mahatma Gandhi Road area of Secunderabad has been shut down recently and old-timers are now wallowing in their nostalgic memories.
Much before multinational fast food brands such as Burger King, McDonald’s, and Subway had set foot in the city, Universal was synonymous with the asli Hyderabadi burgers. Even after international fast food chains took over the Indian market, it was nearly impossible to get a place at Universal in peak hours.
The burgers here, which were quite affordable, had no patties inside. Instead, they used to add a layer of thick shredded or minced meat, tomatoes and onions in melted cheese, and lots of mayo. Their indigenous chicken burgers with shredded chicken and malai filling were full-flavoured. In fact, these burgers were a rage then among the college students who used to throng this bakery. In addition, the desserts including chocolate pastries and plum cakes were their specialties.
Meanwhile, many are taking a trip down memory lane on Twitter.
It was my entire childhood! After shopping in CHERMA'S and eating the popcorn at the stall, we used to head to Universal Bakery! Good times! https://t.co/OBgegx9cUC
It used to be a ritual from school days. Shop in Cherma's, eat in Universal Bakery and of course get to a know a thing or two about the Parsi Community. Adieu Universal Bakery 😭. One of the iconic hangouts in #Secunderabad. https://t.co/dQt796CZPH
