Hyderabad: Hundreds of cyclists in the city are gearing up for a cycle rally on Sunday with the motive of encouraging cycling in the city and also to send a message to motorists that these cyclists also share the road equally.
Initiated by Santhana Selvan, Bicycle Mayor of Hyderabad, the cycle rally will have people from four corners of the city – Gachibowli, Suchitra, Uppal and TSPA – riding cycles with placards towards People’s Plaza on Necklace Road. After a short meeting, they will pedal towards Charminar and close the event at the monument.
“The idea for the rally was initiated when one of our fellow cyclists, Nithin Agarwal, lost his life due to a hit and run accident with no fault of his. Through this cycling revolution, we want to send a message to motorists in the city that we cyclists also share the road. Also, we want to request the government to help us make Hyderabad the capital of cycling,” shares Selvan.
Pointing out that several European countries and a few cities in India have started moving back to cycling and using public transport for commuting, the cycling community wish the same for Hyderabad, which is well connected through public transport.
“For the same initiative, we want to request the government to build a bicycle lane network in the city where every cyclist can travel peacefully without being a hindrance to motorists and vice versa. Also, kids and elderly can get on to their cycles without fear on the roads. We also request the government for strict enforcement on drunk driving, wrong side driving and parking violations for the safety of all,” Selvan adds.
Plans are also afoot to bring the concept of renting bicycles in the city and also to build some good parking facilities for cycles at several public transport stations.
So, don’t be too surprised if you see cyclists flooding the city on Sunday. They are together for a cause. Interested cyclists can join the rally or contact Santhana Selvan – +91 9629557866 or Ravi Sambari at +91 9701744814.
