Hyderabad’s Irani Chai to now cost Rs 5 extra
According to hotel owners, the price rise is due to an increase in the rates of milk, tea powder, and sugar. Not just Irani Chai, the cost of zafrani tea also increased by Rs 5.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s most preferred beverage, Irani Chai, now costs Rs 20 a cup. Most of the cafés and hotels across the city have now increased the price from Rs.15 a cup to Rs.20.
According to hotel owners, the price rise is due to an increase in the rates of milk, tea powder, and sugar. Not just Irani Chai, the cost of zafrani tea also increased by Rs 5.
“The increase in prices of fuel and commercial cooking gas too forced the price hike. Though some cafés and hotels have already increased the price, others may do it after Ramzan season,” says Abood Bin Aslam of Nimrah Café & Bakery, which may hike the price next month.
Due to the rise in input costs – energy, packaging, logistics, and cattle feed, the cost of milk has gone up. Dairy companies like Amul, Parag, and Verka have raised milk prices by Rs 2 citing the rise in input costs. After the centre hiked the price of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) by Rs 50 per cylinder recently, a domestic cylinder now costs Rs 1,002 in the city.
“To tide over the crisis, a hike was inevitable. It would be difficult for us if the prices of ingredients keep inflating,” says another tea stall owner adding that price hike may not have much impact on the business even though some are unhappy with the increase.
Prior to the pandemic, a cup of Irani Chai used to come at Rs 10 a full cup and Rs 8 for the more popular single chai. In 2020, the price was hiked to Rs 15 a full cup due to the financial crisis faced during the lockdown.
