Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s IT Corridor is becoming pedestrian-friendly. The State government, in order to ensure that the bustling streets of the crucial corridor do not become too unfriendly for the pedestrian, has initiated various projects.
Currently, construction of pavements at link roads with Rs 23 crore, remodelling of pavements on main roads, construction of four Foot over Bridges (FoBs) and development of a junction are underway to enhance the safety of commuters in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Serilingampally Zone.

These facilities for walkers are being executed by GHMC and Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Ltd (HRDCL). While the pavements at the link roads are being developed by HRDCL, the pavements on main roads are being remodelled by Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP) agencies under the supervision of GHMC engineers. As a part of the exercise, interlocking tiles are being laid on either side of the roads at corners and at feasible locations, grills and signage are also being installed.
In some locations, saplings are also being grown. Currently, the Old Bombay Highway-Delhi Public School via Engineering Staff College, Nizampet X Roads- Hitex Junction, Road No 70 Jubilee Hills (Prashasan Nagar)- NarneRoad (Road No. 78, Jubilee Hills) and Kondapur Masjid Junction- Miyapur Metro Depot are among the stretches where footpath works are underway.
To decrease the burden on the GHMC and other departments, the maintenance of central medians and traffic islands on the Hitex arch to the HICC main gate stretch was handed over to a hospital under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The GHMC also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a company and handed over the maintenance of the Central median/traffic island at Mindspace Underpass to a company under CSR.
Meanwhile, the Urban Community Wing of GHMC is identifying locations to set up street vending zones. Recently a camp was held in civic body’s Serilingampally Circle Office and opinions of vendors were taken.
“After disbursing the loan granted under PM SVANidhi Scheme, we placed a list of stretches before the vendors where the civic body plans to set up street vending zones and took their feedback,” said a GHMC official. Once these works are completed, the IT Corridor, officials promise, will wear an entirely different look.
