Hyderabad: Crispy edges, a soft buttery centre and the comforting aroma of fresh filter coffee, Benne Dosa has quietly become one of Hyderabad’s favourite South Indian comfort foods. Originally from Davanagere, this Karnataka-style dosa is loved for its rich texture, generous use of butter and perfectly balanced crispness that sets it apart from the regular paper dosa.

Traditionally prepared on heavy cast-iron tawas over wood-fired heat, benne dosa develops its signature smoky flavour and golden finish through slow cooking techniques passed down for decades. While Hyderabad’s cafes now recreate the dish in modern kitchens, many continue to preserve the essence of the original preparation through thick batter, buttery layers and classic accompaniments like coconut chutney and filter coffee.

Rameshwaram Cafe

One of the city’s most popular breakfast destinations, Rameshwaram Cafe is known for serving rich Karnataka-style flavours in a lively cafe setting. Their benne dosa arrives with crisp edges, a soft centre and generous butter melting into every layer, making it a favourite among morning diners and weekend cafe crowds alike. The Madhapur cafe is especially known for its bustling breakfast rush and comforting filter coffee pairings.

Venna

Bringing Bengaluru-style tiffin culture to the city, Venna has built a loyal following for its comforting and authentic flavours. The benne dosa here leans towards a softer texture with balanced buttery richness, paired with chutneys and filter coffee that complete the traditional South Indian experience. Tucked away in Manikonda, the space has become a go-to for relaxed breakfast outings.

Kanchi Cafe

Known for blending modern cafe aesthetics with classic South Indian dishes, Kanchi Cafe serves benne dosa with a texture that balances crispness and softness perfectly. Frequented by office-goers, families and late-night diners, the cafe has become a preferred stop for relaxed breakfasts and evening coffee outings across its Hitech City and Kompally spaces.

Nani’s Veg

For those seeking a more homely vegetarian dining experience, Nani’s Veg offers a simple yet satisfying take on benne dosa. Served alongside fresh chutneys and classic accompaniments, the dosa focuses on familiar flavours and comforting textures that make the dish so widely loved. The Jubilee Hills restaurant remains especially popular among families and casual diners looking for hearty South Indian meals.
