Hyderabad: Motorists can now hope for speedy repair of potholes on roads with the police department coming forward to assist the civic bodies in identifying potholes for addressing the problem on priority.

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), the surveillance cameras installed at every nook and cranny of the State capital would aid the staff at the recently inaugurated Public Safety Integrated Operations and Data Centre in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate in identifying potholes for taking up repairs immediately.

There are more than five lakh cameras helping in crime deterrence. With the help of these cameras, the staff at the data centre would capture the images of potholes on a given stretch. The same images would be shared with the GHMC, HMDA and R&B, for necessary action.

“Using AI, we are developing a methodolgy to ensure that the surveillance cameras detect a pothole and capture an image,” an official, who is privy to the upcoming facility, said. “From our side, we are ready to extend required assistance in giving information about potholes along with photographs to the civic bodies,” he said.

According to the official, the police department in coordination with the civic departments concerned is coming up with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to take up repairs to potholes after identifying them through surveillance cameras.

The SOPs would be framed in such a manner that there would not any bureaucratic rigmarole or jurisdiction issue in attending to the problem on the roads. Earlier, there used to be confusion on which department should repair the pothole developed on roads maintained by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Secunderabad Cantonment Board, Roads & Buildings department, and National Highways Authority of India.

Once the SOPs are finalised, repair to potholes would be taken up immediately, bringing much needed relief to motorists, the official said adding the process would be completed within a few weeks.
