Hyderabad: After the Durgam Cheruvu cable-stayed bridge which has proved to be a hugely popular spot, Hyderabad is likely to have a second cable-stayed bridge along Mir Alam tank in Old City to ease traffic congestion in the heavily crowded area and promote tourism as well.

The iconic Durgam Cheruvu cable-stayed bridge was constructed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in association with Larsen and Toubro under Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP). Now, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is planning a similar cable-stayed bridge along Mir Alam tank.

The six-lane structure is likely to extend over two km, connecting Bengaluru Highway with Chintalmet near Attapur. The structure is being proposed along the D Mart-Gurudwara-Kishanbagh-Bahadurpura crossroads route, a senior HMDA official told Telangana Today. “We have invited consultants to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project. The consultants will study different aspects including technical and financial feasibility and make recommendations. Based on the DPR, a decision will be taken,” the official said.

The construction of a cable-stayed bridge along Mir Alam tank will serve multiple purposes. The structure will help in smooth flow of traffic from Chintalmet towards Bengaluru Highway. It is a high-traffic corridor and traffic snarls occur frequently on this route, the official said. “Since it is being planned along the Mir Alam tank, not much of land or properties would have to be acquired. In addition to this, like Durgam Cheruvu bridge, this structure will further help in boosting tourism in old city,” he said.

Apart from making things convenient for vehicle users and cutting down travel time, the bridge will also offer breath-taking views of picturesque locations along the water body, the official explained.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao launched the cable-stayed bridge on Durgam Cheruvu on September 25 last year. On weekends, traffic is suspended on the bridge and many musical and cultural programmes are organised to provide recreation for Hyderabadis.

Constructed as part of SRDP, the bridge has helped in decongestion of traffic towards HITEC City, reducing commute time from Jubilee Hills to Madhapur from 30 minutes to about 10 minutes, besides cutting down the distance from Mind Space to Jubilee Hills by two kms. A unique aspect about Durgam Cheruvu Bridge is that it has the world’s longest precast segmental span of 233.85 mts in concrete for a cable-stayed bridge.

The bridge was constructed using a total of 428 MT of high-tensile strands, 26,600 cum of concrete, 4,800 MT of steel and 287 MT of stay-cables. The cable-stayed bridge portion is 435 metres long including the approaches at both ends, 25.8 metres wide with a total of 52 stay cables.
