Hyderabad: Promising city paddler Balusuri Varun Shanker finished third at “WTT Youth contender Muscat” held in Muscat.
The India No.3 in Under-19 boys’ category topped the table in the group matches to enter the main draw. Varun defeated Andrevas Janandith Gunawardena of Sri Lanka 3-0 (11-7, 11-0, 11-4) in quarterfinals but lost to compatriot and the ultimate winner of the title Payas Jain 2-3 (9-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-5, 1-11) in semifinals.
Varun’s coach Somanth Ghosh at SG MLR-UTT Academy in Kukatpally Housing Board in Hyderabad, expressed his satisfaction over the performance of his student. “He is in good form but an injury in his knee troubled him during this tournament. Hoping for the best in him in the upcoming tournaments,” Somnath said.
Meanwhile, Shanker was selected for Slovakia and Hungary tournaments.
