Hyderabad: A year after it was established, the much-publicised Hydraa Police Station remains non-functional at Budha Bhavan complex, on the banks of Hussain Sagar.

One year ago, on May 8, the Chief Minister and also Chairman of Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (Hydraa), A Revanth Reddy, inaugurated the police station.

The dedicated police station was set up after Hydraa’s jurisdiction was extended to the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR), comprising the entire GHMC and the Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Sangareddy districts up to the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

Hydraa police station’s role mainly focused on protecting lakes and registering cases such as land grabbing, public property (assets) damage and other land-related issues.

Soon after the police station was established, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who would act as the Station House Officer (SHO), was appointed along with supporting police personnel, including 6 inspectors, 12 sub-inspectors and 30 constables specifically deputed to the Hydraa police station.

Sources told ‘Telangana Today’ that the Hydraa Police Station, though it has been established under the provisions of Clause (s) of Section 2 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and Clause (u) of Section 2 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, has been delayed in securing the legality to run the police station officially.

“Thus, the services of the police personnel who are deputed here from various police stations are utilised for the Hydraa operations,” said the sources.

Hydraa Commissioner AV Ranganath said the process of securing the legality was in progress and that they were expecting a green signal in a month or two. He also said that since the Hydraa came into force, a total of 29 FIRs have been registered in various police stations against encroachers and land grabbers. “Since launching Prajavani, over 30,000 petitions have been received from citizens on land encroachments and other issues,” Ranganath added.
