Hyderabad: As an “incredible year” to him comes to an end, Ram Gopal Varma seriously has no qualms, nothing professional nor personal.
His witty tweets speak much elaborately about the world around him. His tweets turn caustic sometimes as he says, “I won’t see the world as good and bad. Every individual reacts differently and makes decisions according to his own circumstances. When good happens people put him on a pedestal and raise him and hail him. He is tainted if anything goes wrong. The drama around these personalities is what excites my imagination as a filmmaker.”
The maverick director is working on a slew of projects that were taken from real life incidents. ‘Aasha Encounter’ is about the infamous Disha gang assault that took place in Hyderabad. Starring Srikant Iyendar and Sonia Akula in the lead roles, the film is being jointly directed by RGV and Anand Chandra.
Of late, any film that has a minimal involvement of RGV into it is being called “RGV film”.
“For every film, I would simultaneously express and develop my own artistic voice. Choosing a subject that excites my imagination. How and why it should connect with audiences is a process I would undertake in the beginning of every film. A great deal of time, effort, and creative energy is often hard cash. Since my contribution went into it, whoever resurrects the story on the screen eventually calls it “RGV film’. Coming to the upcoming film ‘Aasha Encounter’, I had done a great deal of research, spoke to police higher-ups. On what aspect the story is focussed is an interesting thing.”
Going by the trailer of the film ‘Aasha Encounter’, the characters and sequences resemble the real incident of Disha encounter.
How could you say it’s a fictional story? “As shown in the trailer, many such heinous crimes took place all across the country in the past. The story is not related to a specific woman. That’s why we called it a fictional story. Whether it is the Nirbhaya gang rape incident or Hyderabad’s Disha incident, all these have a common thread. A woman is sighted wandering lonely. A few men from gangs do something.. whatever new amendments and new acts come in, such heinous crimes continue to occur. But in this specific incident of Disha, all the four accused were common people just like any other individuals among us. We should study how barbaric they had turned on that specific night. What propelled them to commit such a crime? What’s the psychological state when they gathered to discuss after spotting the lonely woman on the highway? What was the conversation they had before taking up her into the lorry? – is what the story dwells deep,” he adds
Voicing his opinion on the low-ticket fares in Andhra Pradesh theatres, RGV says, “It’s not fair to impose restrictions on ticket fares at the box office. The Telugu cinema saw a sea change after SS Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’. At a time when films witnessed low success rates, ‘Baahubali’ came as a storm, sweeping the box office collection with record numbers. It gave massive recognition to the entire Telugu film industry, now he made another film with a huge investment. It’s not fair to sell it on par with ticket rates of low-budget movies which are made with Rs 1 crore. Whether you wear simple clothes or branded ones depends on your spending power. Restricting ticket prices similar to necessary commodities would eventually make manufacturers stop producing the goods.”
