Melbourne: World No. 2 Iga Swiatek defeated qualifier Maddison Inglis on Monday to reach her 14th career Grand Slam quarterfinal and third at the Australian Open. The second seed dropped just three games in a commanding 6-0, 6-3 win on Rod Laver Arena.
This was Swiatek’s first match against an Australian at the Australian Open, though she had previously beaten Inglis 6-1, 6-2 in the 2021 Adelaide second round en route to her maiden hard-court title.
Swiatek dominated the opening set, breaking serve repeatedly to claim it 6-0. Inglis showed flashes of resistance with powerful serving and effective positioning, but Swiatek’s baseline power and clinical shot-making proved decisive. The Pole sealed the set with a stunning backhand overhead winner from a defensive position.
Inglis fought hard in the second set, but Swiatek’s consistency and aggressive forehands carried her through. Serving for the match for the second time, Swiatek held to love to clinch the set 6-3 and secure victory in straight sets.
Swiatek will now face No. 5 seed Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Swiatek leads their head-to-head 6-5, but Rybakina won their only previous Australian Open meeting 6-4, 6-4 in the 2023 fourth round.
A six-time Grand Slam champion, Swiatek has won the French Open four times, Wimbledon once and the US Open once. She is now just three wins away from completing a career Grand Slam.
