Immediate demolition of tilted four-storey building in Gopanpally ordered

An illegal four-storey residential building developed a dangerous tilt in Gopanpally on Friday, prompting authorities to evacuate residents and cordon off the area. Following an inspection, CMC Commissioner G Srijana ordered immediate demolition of the structure.

Hyderabad: Panic gripped NTR Nagar in Gopanpally, Hyderabad, on Friday afternoon after an illegal four-storey residential building developed a sudden and noticeable tilt, raising immediate fears of a tragic collapse, as the building was occupied by families.

The incident took place at around 1 pm in the Serilingampally Zone, triggering an emergency response from the authorities of Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and local police authorities.

According to officials, the building was constructed five years ago without CMC permission. The building was developed on a plot measuring just 50 square yards in severe violation of safety norms, which only allow a ground-plus-one structure for plots of that size.

Thanks to prompt action by the authorities, all occupants of the tilting building, residents of surrounding areas, and families from adjoining residential buildings were safely evacuated within two hours to prevent any casualties, and the immediate vicinity was securely cordoned off.

Teams from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (Hydraa) Disaster Response Force (DRF), the CMC engineering wing, and town-planning officials rushed to the site to inspect the structural failure and foundation integrity.

Following a joint inspection, Town Planning City Planner Akbar stated that CMC Commissioner G Srijana has ordered the immediate demolition of the dangerous structure. According to officials, heavy machinery, including earthmovers, has been deployed to bring the structure down safely.

The Gopanpally illegal structure incident comes closely on the heels of a fatal tragedy on August 22, when an illegal seven-storey apartment collapsed in nearby Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, resulting in two worker deaths.

The recurring incidents have raised severe public concern regarding unauthorised constructions, compromised building standards, and weak foundations across rapidly developing localities in the city.
