IMD issues orange alert as Telangana braces for severe heatwave till May 20

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Telangana, warning of a severe heatwave till May 20. Temperatures are expected to range between 41°C and 44°C across all districts. Health officials advised precautions against dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Hyderabad: A grueling spell of dry summer heat has gripped Telangana, with all districts entering into a high-temperature zone.  On Sunday, the IMD, Hyderabad has issued an orange alert across Telangana, warning people of a severe and unrelenting heatwave that will blanket virtually all districts till May 20.

From Sunday to Wednesday, May 20, all the districts in Telangana will experience maximum temperatures from 41 degree Celsius to 44 degree Celsius, forecast from India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad on Sunday said.


Under this high-risk advisory, maximum temperatures are projected to consistently scorch the state between a grueling 41 degrees Celsius and 44 degree Celsius, raising significant public health concerns.

An Orange Alert means a high chance of heat exhaustion and heatstroke for people, especially vulnerable individuals like infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

To mitigate the severe risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses during this prolonged dry spell, the Director of Public Health (DPH) in their heatwave advisory has strongly urged public to restrict outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, wearing light cotton clothing, and maintain rigorous hydration using water, ORS, or traditional fluids.
