IMD issues red alert for Telangana as hailstorms, heatwave collide

The IMD Hyderabad has issued a red alert for hailstorms and thunderstorms in Telangana while warning of a severe heatwave in northern districts with temperatures above 44°C. The state is expected to witness extreme and contrasting weather conditions.

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, on Monday issued a red alert of severe hailstorms and thunderstorms in multiple districts of Telangana, alongside a heatwave alert for the northern districts for Tuesday.

Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad and Nagarkurnool were placed under a red alert signalling hailstorm, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.


Simultaneously, a severe heatwave warning is in place for northern districts, including Adilabad, Komaram Bheem, Asifabad, and Mancherial, where temperatures are expected to be more than 44 degree Celsius.

In contrast to the dry heat in northern districts, thundershowers and hailstorms have also been forecasted for Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanumakonda, and Ranga Reddy districts till Tuesday.

“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at isolated places over Telangana. No large change in maximum temperatures during the next 2 days, thereafter a gradual fall by 2 to 3 degrees during subsequent 3 days, IMD, Hyderabad forecast said.

On May 6 and 7, the temperatures are expected to dip, as the weather department has forecasted extensive thunderstorms and gusty winds across multiple districts of Telangana.

The districts, which are expected to witness thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds between May 6 and 7, are Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mahabubnagar and Nagarkurnool.
