Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Systems (INCOIS) has been conferred with the Industrial Innovation Award 2021 instituted by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) under the category ‘Top Innovative Research Institutions -2021’ for the development of the GAGAN Enabled Mariner and Instrument for Navigation and Information (GEMINI) systems, a press release said.
The GAGAN enabled mariner and GEMINI systems were developed for dissemination of the ocean information services such as Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ) advisories, ocean state forecasts, high wave alerts, tsunami early warning services, etc. to the fishermen and seagoing community.
The GEMINI system addresses one of the major and critical communication gaps faced by the fishermen community, which is the limitation in receiving warnings once fishermen go beyond the communication range of mobiles in the ocean. To address such issues, GEMINI system was developed to provide seamless access to ocean information to them irrespective of their distance from the coast.
Dr. T. Srinivasa Kumar, Director, INCOIS said “State-of-the-art systems like GEMINI help in delivering important societal services of INCOIS such as Potential Fishing Zone Advisories, Ocean State Forecasts and Tsunami Early Warnings to stakeholders who are out of reach of standard communication channels. Accurate, timely and actionable warnings delivered through innovative means are central to all blue economy initiatives”.
