Increase procurement of paraboiled rice: Telangana govt urges Centre

Hyderabad: The State government on Wednesday urged the Centre to increase procurement of paraboiled rice up to 80-90 per cent of total rice procured by the Centre for the Yasangi (Rabi) 2020-21 season. The Centre was also requested to increase the CMR (custom milled rice) delivery date by 30 days for the Yasangi season as against loss of equal number of days during the Yasangi 2019-20 season earlier.

Industries Minister KT Rama Rao and Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar called on Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Wednesday and submitted representations on paddy procurement on behalf of the Telangana government. They explained about various issues being faced by the State due to the decision of the Union government and also the Food Corporation of India.


The State government pointed out that from 2011-12 to 2019-20, the Centre has been allowing upto 92.7 per cent of paraboiled rice of total rice procured and the State government made arrangements as per the previous procurement.

The Ministers informed that considering the decision of the FCI, the State will suffer severe losses in case of supplying raw rice in large quantity. They also urged the Union Minister to continue the moisture content and other parameters fixed for paddy procurement earlier, and any changes will results in losses for farmers.

The Union Minister also assured to look into the request by the State government for procurnig upto 50 lakh tonnes of paraboiled rice during the current Yasangi (Rabi) season. The government also appealed the Centre to purchase 80 lakh tonnes of paddy from Telangana.
