Hyderabad: Dr Anandeshwar Pandey, Executive Director of the Handball Association of India (HAI), welcomed the latest communication from the International Handball Federation (IHF), dated October 9, 2026, reaffirming its recognition of HAI as the sole legitimate representative of handball in India.
In an official letter addressed to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha, the IHF stated that it considered the matter concerning HAI’s recognition closed following its correspondence with the IOA in September 2026.
The IHF also confirmed that its head office had decided not to refer the matter to the IHF Council for consideration of a possible suspension of handball activities in India. Accordingly, international-level handball activities involving HAI will continue uninterrupted.
The international governing body clarified that the forthcoming HAI General Assembly and elections remain unaffected and are expected to take place in 2027, following a formal announcement. The IHF reiterated that individuals wishing to contribute to the administration and development of Indian handball may contest the elections, subject to the eligibility criteria and requirements prescribed under HAI’s statutes and regulations.
In another significant development, the IHF requested the IOA to reinstate HAI as a full member, with all corresponding membership rights, enabling the federation to discharge its responsibilities and participate fully in the IOA’s activities in accordance with its statutes.
Dr Pandey said the IHF’s communication provided important clarity on the administration of handball in India and the continuation of the country’s international handball activities.
He emphasised the importance of institutional stability, transparent administration and a collective commitment to developing handball, with a focus on creating greater opportunities for Indian players, coaches and officials to participate and excel at the national and international levels.
