Hyderabad: India’s hopes of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 were extinguished on October 14, 2025, after a heartbreaking 1-2 loss to Singapore at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa.
The match started promisingly for India as Lallianzuala Chhangte gave them the lead in the 14th minute. However, Singapore’s Song Uiyoung scored either side of halftime, turning the match on its head and leaving India’s qualification hopes in tatters.
India, with two points from four matches, now faces an uphill battle. Even if they win their remaining fixtures, their maximum tally of eight points will be insufficient for qualification. Singapore and Hong Kong, both already on eight points, are certain to secure more, dashing India’s hopes.
Chhangte, who had earlier given India the advantage, almost doubled the lead in the 29th minute. He latched onto a through ball from Anwar Ali, slipped past his marker, and squared the ball for Sunil Chhetri. The veteran striker failed to connect, but Redeem Colaco fired a shot on target. However, Singapore’s Baharudin made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny India.
Singapore had limited offensive intent, relying mostly on long balls, but India’s defence looked comfortable dealing with them until a crucial mistake late in the first half. In the 44th minute, a cross from Irfan Najeeb should have been cleared, but Rahul Bheke’s header inadvertently found Glenn Kweh. Kweh calmly set up Uiyoung in the box, and the midfielder made no mistake, burying a left-footed strike past goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to equalize just before the break.
The second half began with India seeking to regain the advantage, but Singapore delivered a devastating blow in the 58th minute. Shawal Anuar floated a clever ball to Ikhsan Fandi, whose perfect run sliced through India’s defense. Fandi’s cut-back pass found an unmarked Uiyoung at the far post. With time and space, Uiyoung rifled a right-footed shot into the net, completing his brace and giving Singapore a 2-1 lead.
India’s hopes of making it to the AFC Asian Cup are now effectively dashed, and they will now turn their focus to the remaining fixtures with little chance of qualification.
