Purnia: What began as a friendship on Instagram and blossomed into a year-long romance ended in heartbreak and tragedy in Bihar’s Purnia district.

A 19-year-old student, who had eloped with her boyfriend after her family arranged her marriage elsewhere, died just hours after the couple tied the knot at Purnia Junction railway station.

The deceased has been identified as Manisha Kumari, daughter of Naresh Yadav, a resident of Butterbari in Araria district. She was currently doing her BA degree. Manisha had been in a relationship with a young man from the Palasi police station area of Araria district, who is said to be an intermediate student.

Police said the two first connected on Instagram about a year ago. What started as casual conversations on social media gradually developed into a close friendship and later a romantic relationship. Over time, the couple began planning a future together. However, complications arose when Manisha’s family arranged her marriage to another person.

Unwilling to accept the decision, she left home with her boyfriend. The couple travelled from Araria to Purnia with the intention of starting a new life together. After arriving in Purnia, the young man married Manisha at Purnia Junction by applying sindoor (vermilion).

Following the ceremony, the couple spent the night at the railway station. On Monday evening, they set out from Rambagh on foot to visit the City Kali Temple. While on their way, Manisha suddenly complained of dizziness and began feeling unwell. Her condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly, prompting her husband and local residents to rush her to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Purnia.

Despite efforts by doctors to save her, Manisha died during treatment. The sudden death of the young woman left her husband devastated.

After receiving information about the incident, police from the GMCH Town Outpost reached the hospital, took custody of the body, and initiated legal proceedings. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and authorities are awaiting the report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police have informed Manisha’s family and are questioning the young man as part of the investigation.

Officials are examining the sequence of events leading up to the marriage and her sudden death. The incident has left both families in shock and raised several unanswered questions, which investigators hope to clarify once the post-mortem report is received.
