Nirmal: A police head constable was killed on the spot after being mowed down by an unidentified two-wheeler when he was on duty at the annual Dhamma Chakra Pravartan programme of Buddhism organised in Bhainsa on Tuesday night.
Police said Gadapale Babu (58), a head constable attached to the Intelligence wing, received serious head injuries, resulting in his death on the spot. He was crossing the road to have a cup of tea when the mishap occurred.
The Pravartan ritual is observed around Dussehra festival, marking the mass conversion to Buddhism under the leadership of Dr BR Amebdkar in 1956.
Meanwhile, the final rites of the constable were conducted at his native Bembara village. Nirmal SP Dr Janaki Sharmila attended the final rites. She paid tributes to Babu and consoled the bereaved family members. She said that the department lost a sincere and dedicated constable.
