Adilabad: In a swift reaction, police moved in and arrested seven persons who allegedly tried to set fire to the house of a youngster for allegedly eloping with a woman of different religion at Mannur Village of Gudihathnoor. The youngster was accused of eloping with a married woman which was begrudged by the woman’s family. Patrolmen, who noticed the attempt to torch the house, nabbed two persons on the spot on Sunday night and arrested five more on Monday.
According to district SP M Rajesh Chandra, a mild tension prevailed at Mannur village following the arson attempt by the arrested persons, whose names were withheld to avoid communal tensions. The arrested persons were from the family of the woman who was married to a resident of the village six months ago, but she was not interested in living with her husband as she was in love with the youngster, who belongs to different religion. Enraged by her eloping with her lover, her family members attempted to torch the house of the youngster. The video of this incident went viral.
Rajesh Chandra along with ASP S Srinivas rushed to the village and took steps to prevent any untoward incidents further. He stated that police force was deployed in the village to prevent any communal clashes. He requested the public not to believe in rumours being circulated on social media. He warned that action would be taken against those who spread unconfirmed news on social media platforms.
