Hyderabad: The Government Railway Police, Secunderabad division, jointly with the Railway Protection Force on Friday nabbed a three-member inter-state gang involved in stealing gold ornaments from railway passengers.
The arrested trio identified as Barsha Khairuyar, Khushabu Kumari and Uttam Khairuyar, all natives of Puruliya district in West Bengal, targeted passengers by unzipping handbags in crowded train compartments and stealing valuables.
According to the police, the two women carried infants to avoid suspicion and created distractions near doors of AC coaches, while the third suspect kept watch on the surroundings.
“Taking advantage of the confusion, they would stealthily unzip bags and steal valuables,” they said.
The gang had arrived in Secunderabad a few days ago and allegedly committed thefts using the same modus operandi.
Acting on suspicion, police detained the trio when they returned to the station to commit similar offences.
Police recovered stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 10.8 lakh from them.
