Indian Premier League has almost reached the last leg of league matches and as of May 11, the playoffs race keeps getting more intense. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s win over the Mumbai Indians showed the doors to elimination for the latter, who will join the the Lucknow Super Gaints.

Most teams need 16-17 points for a safe spot in top 4 of the points table with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Gujarat Titans (GT) all with 14 points each taking up the top 3 positions on the table, followed by Punjab Kings (PBKS) with 13 points in the 4th position

Let’s look at the qualification scenarios for each team

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
NRR : +1.103
Total points : 14 points
To qualify : 1 win in 3 matches

2. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
NRR : +0.737
Total points : 14 points
To qualify : 1 win in 3 matches

3. Gujarat Titans(GT)
NRR : +0.228
Total points : 14 points
To qualify : 1 win in 3 matches

4. Punjab Kings (PBKS)
NRR : +0.571
Total points : 13 points
To qualify : 2 win in 4 matches

5. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
NRR : +0.185
Total points : 12 points
To qualify : 2 win in 3 matches

6. Rajasthan Royals (RR)
NRR : +0.082
Total points : 12 points
To qualify : 2 win in 3 matches

7. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
NRR : -0.169
Total points : 9 points
To qualify : 4 win in 4 matches

8. Delhi Capitals (DC)
NRR : -1.154
Total points : 8 points
To qualify : 3 win in 3 matches

Several teams (RCB, SRH, GT, PBKS) have been battling at the top 4, with a narrow 1-2 point difference, making superior NRR crucial for qualification, particularly for spots 3 and 4.

While 16 points is generally considered safe, a high NRR means a team can potentially qualify with 14 or 15 points.

Due to the high-scoring nature of IPL 2026, teams like Delhi Capitals do not just needs wins to help their cause, but the need wins with big margins to better their NRR in order to qualify.
