Hyderabad: On January 26, during Republic Day celebrations, Droupadi Murmu, the 15th President of India, will unfurls the national flag at Kartavya Path.

Unlike on the Independence Day, when the national flag is ‘hoisted’ at the Red Fort by the Prime Minister, the flag is ‘unfurled’ for the reason that by 1950, India had already gained independence from the British colonial rule.

Hoisting involves raising the flag from the bottom of the pole, symbolising India’s emergence as a free nation after gaining independence from British rule in 1947. This ceremony is accompanied by a guard of honour and the playing of the national anthem, marking the celebration of India’s freedom.

Meanwhile, unfurling the flag, which is already positioned at the top of the pole, symbolises that India is an independent and democratic country which is governed by the people, for the people.

Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution, which officially established India as a sovereign, democratic republic.

Republic Day 2025

India is celebrating its 76th Republic Day in 2025, marking the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. With the theme ‘Swarnim Bharat – Virasat aur Vikas,’ highlighting cultural development.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is the chief guest for the ceremonial parade scheduled to start at Kartavya Path at around 10.30 am.

The ceremonial parade will see 16 tableaux from across States and Union Territories and 15 from Central ministries, departments and organisations, showing the culture and heritage, besides, the defence prowess of the country.
