Hyderabad: Declaring solidarity with the people of Visakhapatnam in their protest against the Centre’s move to privatise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, TRS working president and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday said that if necessary, he would visit Visakhapatnam as well.

Stating that if it was VSP now, it could well be BHEL and Singareni Collieries Company Limited later and even State governments as well, Rama Rao said the people of Visakhapatnam had fought and achieved the VSP.

“Now, the Centre is trying to sell 100 per cent of the VSP. We stand with the people of Visakhapatnam against privatisation of VSP. If necessary, with the permission of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, we will visit Visakhapatnam to extend our support. If we don’t respond, next they will target us. Now they are selling the VSP, tomorrow they will sell BHEL, Singareni and later on the State governments… they will also privatize them… they will do anything,” he said here on Wednesday.

The Minister asked the people of Andhra Pradesh to come in support of Telangana if the Centre moves to privatise any government institutions in the State. He said the State government was asking for new educational institutions like IIM, NID, JNVs and government medical colleges, but the Centre had not sanctioned a single institution to Telangana out of 272 newly sanctioned institutions.

Asking why BJP MLC Ramachandra Rao was not questioning his party leadership in New Delhi over Telangana being neglected, Rama Rao said the State government had filled 1.32 lakh vacancies in the last six years. The Congress government in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh had filled 24,048 job vacancies from 2004-2014, out of which Telangana’s share was only about 10,000, he said.

“In the last 10 years, the Congress government filled only 1,000 posts per year, but the Telangana government has given 20,000-22,000 jobs per year,” he said, adding that 50,000 more jobs would be notified soon by the State government.

“Modi had said he would give jobs to 2 crore people every year after he comes into the government. It’s been six years, have 12 crore jobs come? We have given 1.32 lakh jobs in the government sector besides provided direct job opportunities to 15 lakh in the private sector. About 15,000 industries were permitted in the State. If they gave 2 crore jobs every year, can they show,” he said.

Criticizing the Union government over increase in LPG cylinder, diesel and petrol prices, he said when Modi government came into power, the LPG price was Rs.414 but it has now reached nearly Rs.900.

Given the pandemic, the Chief Minister had asked the Union government to ease the situation with funds, but the Centre had not released even the arrears the State had to get, he said.
