Jana Nayagan mirrors Vijay’s political messaging on the big screen

Chennai: The song ‘Raavana Mavan Da’ from ‘Jana Nayagan’ symbolises raw power and energy unleashed by a heart of gold, C Joseph Vijay, to destroy evil and bring hope into the lives of millions of people.

Nearly every scene, shot and beat in this Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay-starrer seems built around one idea. Again and again, we see a selfless leader stepping into harm’s way, risking everything to bring some good into a world that badly needs it.

In this context, Raavan stands for something bigger, the almost mythical power of an “asura”, strong enough to crush evil without breaking a sweat and prove once again that doing the right thing is a reward in itself. In essence, this was the campaign message Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder Vijay ran on ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

Even after the party’s election win, Vijay has promised to take a bullet if it means safeguarding the people’s welfare.

Vijay has repeatedly spoken about walking away from acting at the very peak of his career, turning his back on the crores he was earning to instead serve the very people who gave him everything, including the fame he enjoys.

He has also famously vowed that he will not take even a single paisa of public money for himself and that he will not let anyone in his government misuse or exploit people’s money either.

Vijay has repeatedly emphasised how central women’s and children’s safety is to his party and government, and how vital it is to any civilised society.

He has consistently targeted the DMK, accusing it of dynasty politics and of resorting to deception purely for vote-bank gains.

While Vijay has, in real life, tried to position himself as an heir to the welfare legacies of stalwarts like MG Ramachandran and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he has not spared the AIADMK either, training his fire on the party under Edappadi K Palaniswami’s leadership.

‘Jana Nayagan’, to a large extent, brings alive the same spirit and does its best to reinforce the idea that Vijay is a resourceful and formidable leader committed to delivering all that is good to the people.

The film takes an indirect aim at the two parties it blames for decades of exploiting the state.

The film goes further, taking aim at another party by highlighting how leadership has simply been handed down the family line, from grandfather to father to son and grandson.

In one striking visual, a kidnapped girl’s dupatta takes the place of the green stripe on the Indian tricolour, a powerful image that drives home the point that a nation’s true honour is measured by how it treats its women.

In the film, whether it is a protest or a widow leading an agitation against illegal liquor, Vijay is invariably the one who steps in with the answers to every problem.

Another moment ends on a reassuring note, promising that every woman across Tamil Nadu stands firmly behind him.

Through these layered subtexts, ‘Jana Nayagan’ works hard to cast Vijay as the modern-day successor to the iconic MGR, an image of a fearless protector standing guard over women’s dignity and honour.

The film, originally slated for a Pongal release in January this year, well ahead of the April 23, 2026 polls, finally hit screens on Thursday.

Interestingly, Vijay became only the second sitting chief minister after MGR to have a film released during his tenure.

Back in 1977, just weeks after MGR was sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, his film ‘Meenava Nanban’ hit theatres.
