Jagtial: Senior Congress leader T Jeevan Reddy urged the State government to take steps to prevent encroachments on tanks and ponds in the district.
On Tuesday, he wrote to Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy seeking immediate action to address the issue. He stated that several farmers were unable to cultivate their lands as land under reservoirs, ponds, and canals had not come under the control of the State government properly. Residents of villages around Nagunuru, Nagulakunta ponds and SRSP canal bordering areas, particularly those near Jagtial town, were facing hardships due to problems related to irrigation water and land rights. Lack of coordination between the Revenue and Irrigation departments was aggravating the issue, he observed, and sought a joint survey under the supervision of the District Collector to re-examine buffer zone limits.
He informed the Minister that land grabbers had recently damaged a sluice shutter and released water, resulting in fish being washed away and causing losses to fishermen. He urged the government to repair damaged sluice shutters and ensure regular water supply so that farmers, fishermen and the Mudiraj community do not lose their livelihoods.
