Hyderabad: Want a whiff of fresh air? Jubilee Hills, with all its glitz and glamour on one side and the greenery and heritage rock formations on the other, could be where you can head to in the city.

According to the Air Quality Index (AQI) report by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) released a few days ago, Jubilee Hills has the best air quality in the city now and in fact, is one of the two areas in the city that recorded ‘good’ air quality, with the other being Uppal.

Taking into account the levels of various substances in the air, the AQI is measured at six different National Air Quality Monitoring Programme (NAMP) stations across the city. It is classified into ‘good’, ‘satisfactory’, ‘moderate’, ‘poor’, ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ ranges depending on the number.

Jubilee Hills and Uppal recorded a ‘good’ AQI, at 30 and 50 respectively, on September 7. While Jubilee Hills was at a ‘good’ level in the first week of September, Uppal went from a ’satisfactory’ AQI of 56 to a ‘good’ AQI of 45. Uppal, though close to an industrial area, has still registered a good AQI.

Of the other four NAMP stations, at Balanagar, Paradise, Charminar and Jeedimetla, only Jeedimetla did not show any change, neither improvement nor decline, in the AQI. Balanagar, Paradise and Charminar all registered an improvement in the AQI between the first and second weeks of September.

All the NAMP stations recorded AQI of less than 100, putting the quality of air in the satisfactory range across the city. Particulate Matter, i.e. microscopic particles suspended in the air are also taken into consideration while measuring AQI and their levels also showed a drop in the same time period.

This is also indicative of an improvement in the air quality. The levels of both PM10 and PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 10 and 2.5 micrometres respectively) dropped at all the NAMP stations except Jeedimetla, which showed no change.
