Hyderabad: These days, residents in the Jubilee Hills areas are experiencing severe disruptions in their normal life with road excavations and underground drainage works, launched days before the by-poll, advancing at a snail’s pace and leaving trenches open.

The civic projects have affected SBH Colony, Kamalapuri Colony, Shalivahana Nagar Colony, LIC Colony, the main stretch near Satya Sai Nigamagamam, and colonies in Yellareddyguda.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) began the excavation of key roads and installation of new underground drains ahead of the Jubilee Hills by-poll to improve infrastructure. The works commenced days before the by-poll and continued through the colonies of SBH, Kamalapuri, Shalivahana Nagar, LIC and on the main thoroughfare near Satya Sai Nigamagamam.

The residents complain of open trenches, disrupted traffic and hampered movement. Hundreds of families find it difficult to drive or walk through their neighbourhoods. Some expressed safety concerns for children and elderly members due to the risk of accidents and the absence of proper alternative pathways.

Residents of Kamalapuri Colony, SBH Colony and LIC Colony, frustrated at the inordinate delays, told ‘Telangana Today’, “the slow pace of both road repairs and underground drainage works are causing severe problems in daily activities, with many of us unable to drive or walk through neighbourhood.”

Some residents are aghast at the tardy progress of the works. “We welcome the GHMC move to lay new CC Roads, but daily life has been affected as roads remain dug up, and uncertainty marks the completion of the works. We are worried at the lack of a clear timeline,” lamented Jyothsna, a resident.

In another instance, on the main stretch near Sri Satya Sai Nigamagamam, deep excavation for underground drainage works has left the road almost blocked. This key stretch in Sri Nagar Colony is used by hundreds of daily commuters travelling towards Punjagutta Metro Station and the Jubilee Hills check-post.

The GHMC officials defended the prolonged timeline, attributing delays to night-time work schedules and interruptions from poll campaign activities, including campaign vehicles and padayatras. “We aim to complete all works ahead of the Sankranthi festival,” a senior GHMC engineering wing official said.
