Hyderabad: One of the city’s most iconic railway landmarks, the magnificent Kacheguda Railway Station, has completed 110 years of public service, marking a significant milestone in Hyderabad’s transportation history.

The historic station, inaugurated on June 10, 1916, during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan, was originally built as the headquarters of the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR). Renowned for its distinctive Gothic-style architecture, the station features majestic domes and minarets, earning recognition as a heritage structure.

Despite modernisation and the construction of new facilities, the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities have ensured that the station’s historic character remains intact. Kacheguda Railway Station is one of the city’s four major railway terminals and serves as the headquarters of the Hyderabad Division of SCR.

The station handles services to major destinations, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Tirupati, Mysuru, Indore, Bhopal, Madurai, Mangaluru and Nanded. It has also emerged as a model for sustainable infrastructure, receiving Green Platinum, solar energy, energy conservation and environmental awards.

Equipped with solar power systems, it generates substantial energy savings while catering to around 50,000 passengers daily. Railway officials estimate that the station contributes nearly Rs 60 lakh in revenue to SCR every day. With five platforms, modern passenger amenities, a miniature rail museum and plans for further infrastructure development, Kacheguda Railway Station continues to blend heritage with contemporary railway operations.

Kacheguda Rail Museum:

Located within the historic Kacheguda Railway Station premises, the Kacheguda Rail Museum continues to attract children, railway enthusiasts and history lovers. Originally established in 2015 and revamped in 2024, the museum highlights the legacy of Kacheguda Railway Station.

Managed by SCR, the museum features archival photographs, vintage signalling equipment, old railway tickets, locomotive models and colonial-era artefacts. A major attraction is the steam locomotive “Sir Alec”, built in 1907, which reflects the engineering heritage of the early railway era.

Visitors can also explore an air-conditioned audio-visual gallery presenting the history, development and safety systems of Indian Railways. Two heritage metre-gauge coaches displayed on the premises further enhance the experience.
