Hyderabad: On their fourth day of Kalasagaram’s 54th Annual Cultural Festival of Music and Drama, they presented yet another grand vocal concert by Vidushi Kolkata Padmavathi. She was supported on the violin by Vidushi V Deepika, on the mrudangam by Vidwan S Anantha Krishnan and on the kanjira by Vidwan S Sunil Kumar.

Padmavathi started the evening with ‘Sarasuda’, a ‘varnam’ in ‘Saveri’ raga. Similar to the previous evening, this ‘varnam’, too, was sung in dual speed. Keeping up with the traditional way of singing, the ‘varnam’ was followed by a ‘Ganesha stuthi’, ‘Varanamukhana’ in the raga ‘Hamsadwani’, a composition of Koteshwara Iyer. This was followed by a majestic raga ‘alapana’ in the raga ‘Devagandhari’. Though brief, it was powerful to move the audience.

The ‘kriti’ ‘Shaalivati’, composed by Dikshitar, was rendered to satisfaction. This was followed by ‘Mamava Karunya’, a composition of Swathi Tirunal in the raga ‘Shanmukhapriya’. An interlude ‘Varuvaro varam tharuvaro’ in the raga ‘Sama’ was well-received.

‘Ambavani’ in ‘Keeravani’, a composition of Muthiah Bhagavathar in ‘Desadi’ was next. The ‘Begada’ was delineated, focusing on the beauty of the raga and the rendering of ‘Naadopasana’, a soulful ‘kriti’ of Tyagaraja, the ‘neraval’ and ‘swaram’ were par excellence. Deepika’s violin was equally good throughout the evening. So were S Anantha Krishnan on the mrudangam and S Sunil Kumar on the kanjira.

‘Vritham’ in ‘Ragamalika’, including ‘Hamir Kalyani’, Kaapi, ‘Sindhu Bhairavi’ and ‘Yaman Kalyani’ was well-rendered with aplomb and was well-received. She concluded the concert with a Annamayya ‘keerthana’ ‘Nagavulu Nijamani’ in ‘Yaman Kalyani’ and a ‘thillana’ in ‘Brindavana Saranga’, her own composition, closing the curtains on a beautiful evening.
