Visakhapatnam: The choice of former MP Kambhampati Haribabu as Governor of Mizoram is being described as a reward for his decades of hard work for the party.
Haribabu’s biggest victory came in 2014 when he, with the support of the Telugu Desam Party defeated YSR Congress Party top leader and widow of YS Rajasekhara Reddy, YS Vijayamma of YSR Congress party in Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha election. Earlier, he was elected as MLA of Visakhapatnam-1 in 1999, as a candidate of BJP with TDP support.
Haribabu, who served as Professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering in Andhra University and later took voluntary retirement, was active in the party from his student days and was closely associated with the then student leader M Venkaiah Naidu who is now Vice-President of India.
Haribabu, who was imprisoned during the Emergency, was also known to be a successful entrepreneur in the aquafarm and marine fisheries industry before he quit to become a full-time politician.
