Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) students, who were detained by police for protesting against the move to clear forested land for auction in Kancha Gachibowli on the campus, were released on Sunday night.
As many as 28 students were released from detention from the Madhapur police station here. With the release of the students, BRS leaders called off their protest.
However, students continued their protest at the university main gate demanding that the government withdraw its decision to auction 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli.
They wanted the university administration to issue a formal statement regarding the encroachment issue and accountability for the use of force against peaceful protesters.
“The Students’ Union, as part of the Joint Action Committee to protect the university land, will continue to resist this land grab both legally and politically,” the Students Union said.
Earlier in the day, a delegation of BRS leaders, including MLC Dasoju Sravan and former Minister Srinivas Goud, visited the Madhapur police station to meet the students who were detained.
They demanded the immediate release of the student leaders, who were arrested for opposing attempts to engage earthmovers to clear the university land for a proposed development project by the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC).
The BRS leaders condemned the arrest of student leaders calling it an attack on democracy. They wanted the student leaders fighting for protecting the university land to be released unconditionally.
