Karimnagar Dairy’s sex sorted semen project hailed

Karimnagar: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) officials expressed satisfaction over the implementation of the artificial insemination project using sex sorted semen by the Karimnagar Dairy to increase milk production through controlled birth of female calves.
P Ananth, DDM of NABARD in Karimnagar along with V Hanumantha Reddy, advisor of Karimnagar Milk Producer Company Limited (Karimnagar Dairy) and Muthyam Reddy, coordinator of Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF) conducted field visits on Thursday.
They inspected the artificial insemination project for sex sorted semen in Gundlapalli, Gunugula Kondapur, Jangapalli, Hanumajipalli and Madhapur villages of Gannevuvaram mandal in Karimnagar district.
On the occasion, P Ananth, DDM of NABARD interacted with the farmers availing the artificial insemination programme through sex sorted semen and the benefits about the programme with the reproduction of female calves. He said that Karimnagar Dairy was the first in Telangana to take up such a novel programme.
It may be mentioned that the project is funded by NABARD and each dose of sex sorted semen costs Rs 900 of which NABARD provides Rs 450 and Karimnagar Dairy Rs 450.
So far, the artificial insemination was conducted to around 1,200 animals and the results were good with the birth of 70 female calves so far.
Besides this, Karimnagar Dairy is providing a cash incentive of Rs 10,000 for the growth and health of the female calf. The incentives include Rs 500 immediate financial assistance to the farmer after the birth of the female calf plus the supply of Rs 1,500 worth healthy fodder feed for the calf growth and another Rs 1,000 worth cash incentive. Above all, they would supply Rs 7,000 worth fodder feed till the growth of the female calf.
The BAIF Pune supplies sex sorted semen to the Karimnagar dairy as part of the National mission for bovine productivity. Accordingly, the Karimnagar dairy would supply sex sorted quality semen with ‘X’ chromosome to get only female progenies through artificial insemination.
