Karimnagar: Dharti Bachao, an NGO, organised an awareness programme expressing its solidarity with COP26 (conference of parties), which is being held in Glasgow of Scotland. In a programme held at Rajiv Gandhi Municipal Park in Mankammathota here on Sunday, several environmental activists have expressed their concern about climate change by holding placards along with environmental awareness quotes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dharti Bachao founder president and national youth awardee, Mohammad Azam said that the United Nations climate summit could be the last chance for humanity to tackle the catastrophic changes due to unrestrained global warming. On October 25, the United Nations Environment Programme warned that the world was on track for a temperature increase of 2.7 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, which is much above the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement to keep it below 2 degrees compared with the beginning of the industrial era.
Unless countries agree to steeply cut carbon emissions, global temperatures will rise beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next 10 to 20 years compared with pre-industrial times, he opined and added that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate believe that the Glasgow summit, known as COP26, could be the last opportunity to tackle global warming, he said.
