Karimnagar: Differently-abled youth critical after suicide bid, alleges harassment by BJP corporator

A differently-abled youth from Karimnagar, who allegedly consumed mosquito repellent and attempted suicide over alleged harassment of his family by a BJP corporator, remains in critical condition. Before the act, he recorded a selfie video accusing the corporator of issuing threats and influencing civic authorities against his family following municipal elections.

Karimanagar: Medical condition of a differently abled youngster, who attempted suicide by consuming mosquito repellent over alleged harassment of BJP corporator targeting his brother, was reported to be critical on Saturday.

The youngster, Shiva, tried to end his life at the cable-stayed bridge on the outskirts of the town on Friday night. He was shifted to a hospital and kept under medical observation for 48 hours. It was learned that his condition deteriorated. Even after 24 hours of treatment, his condition remained critical, a source said.

Earlier, Shiva recorded a selfie video before the attempt. He accused Somidi Venugopal, a corporator of division 29, of threatening to demolish their house in Kisannagar for not cooperating with him during recent elections to Karimnagar Municipal Corporation.

In the video that later went viral on social media, he said he hoped that his family would get justice after his death. He alleged that Venugopal, a close associate of Union minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay, had offered Rs 4 lakh to his brother to endorse his candidature before the elections.

Shiva claimed that Venugopal developed animosity towards his brother after differences emerged over the offer and allegedly threatened to wipe out the family. The youngster alleged that municipal officials served a notice stating that their house would be demolished after Venugopal became a corporator. He said that he was unable to stand by his brother, who was allegedly being targeted by Venugopal.

He hoped that his death would serve as an eye-opener for Bandi Sanjay and ensure justice for his family. It is learned that Somidi Venugopal had allegedly been linked to an attempt-to-murder case in the town in the past and was also accused of assaulting a person a few days ago.
