Karimnagar: Karimnagar commissionerate police busted the inter-State gold polishing cheating gang and detained two of its members.

Presenting the accused before the media here on Monday, Commissioner of Police Kamalasan Reddy explained the modus operandi of the Bihar-based gold polishing cheating gang.

Mohammed Arif (37) alias Chotas alias Mohammed Altaaf of Naryanpur taluka and Mukesh Sha (40) of Tulsipur, Gopalpur taluka, Bagalpur district of Bihar were arrested. Three others were absconding.

The gang members would choose houses having aged persons and single women and cheat them by promising to polish their gold and other ornaments.

To win the confidence of the women, they initially polish silver and bronze ornaments by applying some chemicals. Then they target the gold ornaments and impress the women with their tactics. They would also promise the ladies to polish gold ornaments at a cheaper price.

In a process to cheat the women, they would place gold ornaments in a rice cooker filled with water and apply some powders besides turmeric and ask the victims to take shining ornaments after one hour.

Instead of ornaments, they would place stones carried along with them by diverting the attention of the women. Later, they would flee from the spot along with gold ornaments besides collecting polishing charges.

The gang committed crime in seven States such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

In 2017, they committed crime in Choppadandi, LMD and Manakondur police stations limits. In February 2021, they again committed crime in Boyawada of Karimnagar, Kusumanchi of Khammam district and Vanasthalipur of Rachakonda police station limits.

Karimnagar police followed the gang up to Kusumanchi by examining CCTV footage. Police detained the gang members when they tried to commit crime in Alkapuri colony in Karimnagar on Monday.

Ten grams gold chain, motorcycle, powders and two mobile phones were recovered from them.
