Karimnagar: Ravula Ramesh, Sarpanch of Nustulapur in Thimmapur mandal, has set an example for others to follow in checking gender discrimination with the introduction of an innovative scheme where he will deposit Rs 5,116 in the name of every newborn girl child in the village. The scheme would be implemented from the upcoming Dasara festival.
Ramesh said the amount, coming from his own pocket, would be in the name of ‘Ramesh Anna Kanuka’ (a gift from brother Ramesh).
The Sarpanch, who has been undertaking the funeral expenses of deceased persons from the poorer sections of society, announced his latest initiative during the Poshan Abhiyan programme held in the village on Thursday.
Bank accounts will be opened in the names of the newborn girl child after the 21st day, usually the naming ceremony day. The amount will be in fixed deposit mode in the name of the child for a period of 18 years, after which the deposit papers will be handed over to the parents.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Ramesh said that irrespective of caste and religion, all girls born after Dasara festival would be eligible for the fixed deposit programme.
In order to present a gift for the marriage of a girl from his village, he has decided to fix Rs 5,116 on the names of the newborn girl child. The amount would be helpful to the girl’s marriage or education purposes.
In an attempt to eradicate such discrimination and encourage girl children, Ramesh advised the people to consider girls as Goddess Laxmi Devi if a girl is born in their families.
On the other hand, Ramesh has also been performing the funerals of the poor people by bearing all expenditures. He had performed 37 funerals so far.
