Karwan MLA’s wife files nomination for Baswapur sarpanch post in Medak

Former GHMC corporator Najma Sultana, wife of two-time Karwan MLA Syed Kausar Mohiuddin, has filed her nomination for Baswapur sarpanch post. The December 17 election sees local youth contesting despite Mohiuddin’s push for a unanimous outcome

Medak: In an interesting turn of events, former Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation corporator Najma Sultana, wife of two-time Karwan MLA Syed Kausar Mohiuddin, has filed her nomination for the sarpanch post of Baswapur, a tiny village in Medak district.

Mohiuddin, who was born and raised in Baswapur of Veldurthi mandal before moving to Hyderabad many years ago, joined the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. He won the Karwan Assembly seat in both the 2018 and 2023 elections, while Najma Sultana was elected corporator from Nanal Nagar division twice. Despite his move to Hyderabad, Mohiuddin has continued to maintain close relations with his native village and its residents.

His son contested the Baswapur sarpanch election in 2019, when the village had just 699 votes, but lost to BRS candidate Mallesh Goud. This time, Mohiuddin encouraged his wife, Najma, to enter the fray, and she filed her nomination on Thursday. The election will be held on December 17.

Though Mohiuddin has been trying to ensure a unanimous election by holding discussions with local leaders and promising support for the village’s development, one youngster from Panthulapally, a hamlet of Baswapur, is preparing to contest.
