Hyderabad: BRS MLC K Kavitha on Wednesday demanded that the Centre provide interest-free loans of up to Rs 15 lakh to women’s Self Help Groups (SHGs). She stated that both the BJP at the Centre and the Congress in Telangana had failed women on the promises of empowerment.

Addressing members of the Telangana Women’s Empowerment Federation here on Wednesday, Kavitha charged the Centre with ignoring women’s welfare while waiving off Rs.16.5 lakh crore worth of corporate loans. “The BJP government has no intention of supporting women. If it can bail out big businessmen, why not women SHGs?” she questioned.

The BRS MLC hit out at the Congress government in Telangana for misleading women by falsely claiming to offer interest-free loans of Rs 20 lakh. “During the BRS regime, we never made such exaggerated claims. The current Congress government is giving interest-free loans up to Rs 5 lakh and collecting interest for rest of the amount, just like we did. However, the Congress is lying to score political points,” she said.

She criticised the Centre for raising LPG gas prices by Rs 50 despite global crude prices dropping. “What difference does Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greatness make, if he keeps hiking prices at will, while common people suffer?” she remarked. She urged both State and Central governments to launch dedicated schemes for women and demanded transparency and sincerity in policy implementation.

BRS state leader Roop Singh, Telangana Jagruthi leader Marripalli Madhavi, and several women activists participated in the meeting.
