Hyderabad: The Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit is nearing completion and will soon begin manufacturing modern intercity trains, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday after reviewing the project with Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu and senior officials.
The unit is expected to manufacture 200 intercity trains over the next five years for short-distance travel across the country.
Designed for routes of around 300 km with frequent stops, the trains aim to improve affordable connectivity between towns and cities.
Railway officials said the trains will feature automatic doors, superior ventilation, regenerative braking systems and safer 20-coach designs with two toilets in every coach.
Further, the trains will also be equipped with jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies, enabling speeds of up to 130 kmph.
The Railways expects the new fleet to promote greener transport and reduce road traffic by encouraging more passengers to shift to rail travel.
