Hyderabad: BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao expressed deep condolences over the demise of legendary playback singer and music director S Janaki, affectionately known as ‘Janakamma’.

He said the voice of Janakamma, hailed as the ‘Gaana Kokila’, won the hearts of music lovers across the world.

The BRS Chief said her contributions to Indian film music as a playback singer and music director in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and several other languages had written a golden chapter in the country’s cultural history.

He also described her as a courageous woman who declined the Padma Bhushan in 2013, protesting what she believed was cultural injustice towards South Indian artistes.

He noted that S Janaki had lived in the erstwhile Karimnagar district due to her father’s profession and hailed from Sircilla, calling it a matter of pride for Telangana.

Expressing profound grief, he said her death was an irreparable loss, particularly to South Indian music. “A legendary singer like Janakamma is beyond the fear of ageing and death. Her fame is immortal,” K Chandrashekhar Rao said.

He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family members and countless admirers. He prayed for her soul to rest in peace.
