Siddipet: Putting a permanent end to decades of struggle of farmers belonging to the erstwhile Medak district and parts of neighbouring districts, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will dedicate the Mallanna Sagar Project, built as part of the mega Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) fourth link, to the people on February 23.

The project, which has 50 tmc storage capacity, was built with an outlay of Rs 6,805 crore between Thoguta and Kondapak Mandals in a hilly area. Apart from meeting the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the water from this project will also be used for the industrial needs of Telangana.

While 30 tmc from the project will be used for Hyderabad’s drinking water needs, over 16 tmc water will be released for industrial needs. While the largest project in KLIS will provide irrigation water to 8.33 lakh acres of new ayacut under KLIS Package-12 to 19, Mallanna Sagar will also stabilise the ayacut under existing irrigation projects such as Singur, Nizam Sagar and Sriram Sagar phase-1, which will take the total ayacut under the project to 15.71 lakh acres.

As part of the fourth link of KLIS, water will be released into Konda Pochamma Sagar, Gandhamalla, Basavapur, and Singur projects besides releasing water to meet the irrigation needs of Dubbak constituency, besides meeting the needs of Mission Bhagiratha.

With the completion of the project, link 4 of KLIS has been completed. The bund length of Mallanna Sagar is 22.6 km which has five sluice canals. While four will be used to release water to Konda Pochamma-Gandhamalla-Basvapur-Singur, the fifth will be used to release 2,000 cusecs of water for Mission Bagiaratha every day.

Following the protocols of the Central Water Commission (CWC), the project is being tested by filling up to 10 tmc of water since last August when it was completed. The project currently has 10 tmc of water at 532 meters depth, which is its dead storage. The government has acquired 17,871 acres of land for the project. The project, built in a globe shape of over 600 meters above sea level, has a depth of 557 meters. Over 40 tmc of water can be drawn from the project. Finance Minister T Harish Rao, who was Irrigation Minister when the project was grounded, played a vital role in completing the project by helping the official machinery and guiding the engineering authorities in fast-tracking the works.

TRS District President and Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy said they will also organise a massive public meeting near Mallanna Sagar at Thoguta to mark the inauguration of the project. The Chief Minister will address the people after dedicating the project to the people of Telangana.
