Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday inaugurated an AI-based smart surveillance system called PRISM at the central jail here. Chennithala, in a social media post, said that the artificial intelligence-based Prison Real-time Intelligent Surveillance and Monitoring (PRISM) system was created in collaboration with Keltron, a state-owned electronics enterprise.

The new system uses AI-powered cameras to monitor inmate behaviour, prevent contraband and drug smuggling from outside, and stop escape attempts in real time, he said.

Besides the AI camera surveillance system, which will monitor what is going on inside the prison and along its perimeter walls, a new diet is being introduced by ending the VIP considerations in respect of food, the minister said in his post. He said that the changes were being brought to ensure that the prisons are not a place to repeat mistakes or make new ones, but a platform to reclaim life.
