Last week’s column examined common standardized tests required for graduate applications to U.S. universities. This week, we will discuss English language proficiency tests as an essential part of the application process.

We will cover two of the four English language proficiency tests this week, with the remaining two addressed in next week’s column.

As an international student, you may be required by U.S. universities and colleges to take an English language proficiency test. A strong score on such a test can enhance your application significantly.

Most institutions require scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Pearson Test of English (PTE), or Duolingo.

Just like with standardized tests, it is vital for students to review the admissions requirements on each university’s website before registering for any English language proficiency tests.

The TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) offers two formats: one that can be taken at an authorized test center multiple times a month and another that can be taken at home, offered even more frequently. Students should verify which format is accepted by the universities to which they are applying. It is also advisable for students to plan their test dates well in advance.

The test lasts approximately two hours and consists of four sections that assess a student’s comprehensive language proficiency: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Test takers can achieve a maximum score of 120 on the TOEFL iBT. For more information, students can visit the following links: https://www.etsindia.org/toefl/ and https://www.etsindia.org/toefl-test-prep-book/.

The IELTS Academic test is accepted by numerous U.S. universities. The test is available in computer-based as well as pen and paper format offered on specific dates and times each month with multiple slots.

This test lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes and is divided into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Scores are given on a band scale that indicates the test taker’s proficiency level in English, ranging from 0 (indicating no responses) to 9 (denoting an expert level with full command of the language).

For additional information about the IELTS Academic test, students can visit this link: https://ieltsidpindia.com/ielts/academic, and to understand the scoring bands, they can refer to https://ielts.org/take-a-test/your-results/ielts-scoring-in-detail.

Both tests offer free resources to help students prepare. Additionally, students should consider consulting a nearby EducationUSA center to access test preparation materials and practice samples to enhance their understanding of these assessments.

EducationUSA has two centers in Hyderabad that students may reach out to through this link – https://educationusa.in/about-us/

Next week’s column will discuss the PTE and Duolingo assessments as well as scoring timelines for all four tests.
