Khairatabad Ganesh to be 30 feet tall this year
The idol, which is usually the tallest in the city and attracts thousands of devotees during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, was limited to nine feet last year due to restrictions in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hyderabad: One of Hyderabad’s most popular Ganesha idols, the Khairatabad Ganesh, will be of 30 feet height this year.
The idol, which is usually the tallest in the city and attracts thousands of devotees during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, was limited to nine feet last year due to restrictions in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, while the height will be increased slightly, but not to earlier proportions when it went up to 61 feet in 2019, the theme of the pandal will be on the revival of the world from the pandemic. The 2021 avatar — Ekadasha Rudra Maha Ganapati — will be flanked by idols of Goddesses Lakshmi Devi and Parvathi Devi.
Sculptor Rajendran, who has been associated with the Khairatabad Ganesh for decades now, started the work on this year’s idol after a small pooja. Several craftsmen from other States, including Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, will be involved in the making of the idol.
With the lingering fear of a possible third wave of Covid-19 in the country, the pomp will be missing from this year’s Ganesha Utsav once again. The committee plans on taking every pandemic appropriate precaution, and has also requested devotees to follow all Covid norms when coming for darshan.
